QC 2.0/3.0 USB Charger

 

 

Most likely you do not want to build this project. I have purchased the already assembled device first from AliExpress for $1.5, see picture below. The idea was to use some of my 9V or 12V chargers sitting useless in the basement to power my Galaxy S8 phone. However, the Chinese-made device had flimsy USB connector and ended up broken after a few weeks of usage. On another hand, it doesn't have the power jack connector anyway and required external wiring. Finally, I have decided to build it myself. The charger is based on IP6505 quick charge IC from Injoinic Technology. The chip is compliant with Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0 and 3.0 specifications and designed to use in car chargers. Beside that, it implements various charging protocols like BC1.2, Apple and Samsung proprietary charging schemas. Basically, the circuitry is switching buck converter paired with charging controller. The input voltage is in range from 4.5V to 32V. There are actually two incarnations of IP6505, IP6505 and IP6505T with the slightly different pinouts. Interesting enough, the company corporate site mentions only IP6505. The one I bought from AliExpress was IP6505T based. My first impression when I saw the device was that the QC chip has standard SO8 package. However, the datasheet revealed that it is not SO8 but what they call ESOP8 with the ground plane, meaning the soldering station required to solder the chip. The IP6505 chips can be purchased on AliExpress in small quantities and they are quite inexpensive.
